I have before me half a dozen reports about the death of Shivcharan Ram Ratan Gupta in an old-age home at Sonipat. In one he is 74, in another 78. He had lived at the home for 18 months, nearly two years or three years, depending on the account. One says that his daughters lived in Nepal, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai, while another manages to place all three in Mumbai.
These discrepancies are not important. A man’s age is often reported wrongly, and “three years” may simply mean “a longish time”. But they are worth noticing because the reports, though uncertain about things which could have been checked, were in complete agreement about those which could not.
